Writing in Hindi/Marathi, Indianising information and softwares

It's the decade of localization and software is never an exception to it. In this Flat world, information-flow is independent of geography; and the next flattening phenomenon is information-flow independent of languages. I correct myself, it's not 'next', it has been happening here around me and you since last some years. See the regional language content on web and see the user base of Internet spreading to common masses. With this spread has come many opportunities and challenges for the computer industry; the challenge of communication gap is the major factor which will decide how efficiently we grabt hose opportunities and convert them to win-win situation for ourselves and our customers. Research labs around the globe are working towards solving all these challenges. India is not behind in it. organizations like CDAC, IITs,IIITs and like are working on language technology since last decade itself. Now there are many private players into this and most of them are start-ups, which is encouraging scenario for the language technology future in India. Such a huge participation tothis movement of Indianising the digital information will surely lead to breaking the digital divide and bridging languages which will, in turn, build a stronger economy and nation!Here is our little bridge- Rupantar: http://extensions.services.openoffice.org/project/rupantar.

Navigating the JOBS in the times of AI

One of last staturdays I spoke to first-year students on the opening day of their year. Eighteen, most of them. Some had come for computer science, some for the humanities, some for management or commerce or the pure sciences. Bright, a little restless, and all of them carrying the same question without quite saying it: now that AI has shown up, what happens to my career? I want to write down what I told them, because I don't think it's a question only eighteen-year-olds are asking. Why do jobs even exist? Strip everything away and a job is just a problem somebody is paid to solve. People need food, health, a roof, education, safety, someone to talk to. Those needs don't go anywhere, and every one of them is somebody's work. What's easy to miss is that the needs stay put while the way we meet them gets rewritten every couple of generations. Farming gave us a food surplus. The steam engine gave us factories. Electricity, mass production. Computers, the information...

ती अशीच त्याला भेटली, अगदी अचानक आलेल्या पावसासारखी

खूप पावसाळे गेले. पण अगदी अलीकडे पर्यंत त्याला पाऊस कधीच आवडलेला नव्हता. पाऊस म्हंटल की त्याला भीती वाटायची, नसती कट कट वाटायची. भिजणे तर त्याला कधीच नको वाटायचे, उगाच सर्दी ला आमंत्रण. पण मागच्या पवसाळ्यात ढग असे आले आणि पाऊस इतका पडला की तो पावसाच्या प्रेमातच पडला. पाऊस आधीही पडायचा, कदाचित असाच, इतकाच किंवा जास्त ही. पण या वेळेस मात्र पाऊस एकटा आला नाही, त्याच्या आयुष्यात सोबत घेऊन आला तिच्या केसांचा ओला सुगंध. ती अशीच त्याला भेटली, अगदी अचानक आलेल्या मुंबईतल्या पावसासारखी, चिंब भिजलेली. त्याला ती आवडली आणि म्हणून पाऊस ही. ती त्याला पुन्हा भेटली, न ठरवून, अशीच पुन्हा एकदा अचानक पावसाराखीच. ते बोलले, थांबले, विसावले. ती समोर आली तेंव्हा पाऊस नव्हताच, ती अजून थोडी जवळ आली तेंव्हा ही पाऊस नव्हता. तो तिच्याकडे सारखा पहातच होता, पण नजर चोरून. आयुष्यात पहिल्यांदा त्याने पावसाकडे येण्याची विनवणी केली. आशेच्या नजरेने त्याने ढगांकडे पाहिले. ढग होते, पण अजून पाऊस मात्र नव्हता. तरी ही आजूबाजूंच्या झाडात, डोंगरात, फुलात आणि पाखरात ओलावा होताच. त्याच्या विनवनीने अखेर तो आला. रिम-झिम, रिम-झिम...

आपण महाराष्ट्राच्या संस्कृतीचे अजूनही खरंच पाईक आहोत कि भरकटलोत ?

महाराष्ट्र दिनाच्या सगळ्यांना शुभेच्छा. तसं ज्याला आज आपण महाराष्ट्र म्हणतो, त्याचा हा आधुनिक जन्म दिवस. महाराष्ट्र कधी पासून अस्तित्वात असेल? म्हणजे इथली संस्कृती, आपण जे वागतो, जगतो, बोलतो, राहतो वगैरे वगैरे. कधी पासून हे सगळं असं असावं? याचं उत्तर आपल्या सारख्या सामान्यांपेक्षा हा ज्या कोणत्या विषयाचा विषय असेल त्या विषयाच्या निष्णातांना जास्त चांगलं माहित असेल. तरी, आपला एक सामान्य माणूस म्हणून या भूमीवर अधिकार आहे आणि त्याच अधिकाराने आपण आपला एक अंदाज लावू शकतो. म्हणजे ज्ञानेश्वर-नामदेव इथे आपल्याला या मराठी राज्याची - महाराष्ट्राची - सुरुवात झाली असावी, असा अंदाज लावता येईल.म्हणजे आजच्या आपल्या मराठी म्हणता येईल अशा संस्कृतीची सुरवात तिथून झाली असं आपण समजू शकतो. किंवा मला जे मांडायचं त्या साठी ते सोयीचं आहे म्हणून समजा हवं तर! पण मीच कशाला वारकरी साहित्यातच संत बहिणाबाईंनी लिहून ठेवलयं - संतकृपा झाली । इमारत फळा आली ॥ १ ॥ ज्ञानदेवें रचिला पाया । उभारिलें देवालया ॥ २ ॥ नामा तयाचा किंकर । तेणें रचिलें तें आवार ॥ ३ ॥ जनार्दन एकनाथ । खांब दिधला भागवत ॥ ४ ॥ तुका झालासे कळस । भजन करा ...
